Irate youths on Wednesday set ablaze two commercial banks in protest against continued scarcity of the new naira notes coupled with their rejection of the old notes.
The affected banks located in Orovwohworun area of Udu council area of Delta State include the First Bank of Nigeria and an Access Bank Branch in the locality.
Two vehicles were razed by the protesters in and around the Udu Express Junction and Ovwian area of Udu.
The protesters comprising mainly tricycle and commercial motorcycle operators are said to be among those angered by the commercial banks refusal to accept the old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes.
Eyewitnesses said that trouble started in the early hours of the day when customers of the banks, in their long queue could not access new notes.
It was gathered that the aggrieved youths who complained bitterly on the biting effects of the currency scarcity, coupled by the attitude of the banks officials, first attacked their ATM machines before putting fire on the banks.
Also, a fuel station was touched before the arrival of policemen who blocked a section of the road after the angry mob set fire on the Automated Teller Machines in the banks.
Heavy gunshots continue to rent the air as policemen chased the youths, while commercial activities in the localities have been paralyzed as shops and offices were hurriedly shut.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe said the command will do everything in his power to fish out the perpetrators.
