A motion to declare "Japa" syndrome, the emigration of young Nigerians abroad, a national emergency was defeated by the House of Representatives on Thursday. Rep. Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), who was based in the United Kingdom prior to becoming a Nigerian legislator during plenary, had a motion that was adopted.
Introducing the movement, Agbese expressed insights from the Nigerian Financial Highest point showed that a developing number of youthful Nigerians were migrating abroad. He stated that the most recent findings from the African Polling Institute indicated that, given the opportunity, 69% of young people would choose to relocate.
According to Agbese, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) reported that the number of young Nigerians leaving the country increased by 40% compared to 2019. He stated that the UN DESA revealed that 1.7 million people would leave Nigeria for other countries in 2020, a significant increase from the 990,000 who left in 2010.
According to Agbese, the rising number of young Nigerians moving out of the country and settling permanently in the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada indicates a serious threat to the country's economic, intellectual, and social well-being.
