The Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos has granted bail to the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in the amount of N20m with one guarantee in like aggregate.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted bail to Emefiele in the wake of paying attention to the entries of Emefiele's counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN).

The judge dismissed the Federal Government's case that Emefiele was a flight risk.

President Bola Tinubu had suspended Emefiele as the apex bank boss on June 9, 2023. A day later, the Department of State Services (DSS) affirmed that the troubled and suspended CBN boss was in its custody.

After a few legal firecrackers by Emefiele's counsel challenging his delayed detention by the DSS, the mystery police bowed to tension on July 13, 2023 and declared that the suspended apex bank boss has been charged to court.


Emefiele was brought to court by DSS agents in a hilux vehicle on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

Showing up before Justice Oweibo, Emefiele, 61, pleaded "not guilty" to the two counts of unlawful ownership of firearm and ammunition documented against him by the Federal Government.

In his entries, Emefiele's lawyer, Daudu, asked the court to give bail on self recognizance or based on other liberal conditions, forthcoming the consultation and assurance of the preliminary.
He said, “There is no counter affidavit from the Federal Government opposing bail. Also, the defendant is a renowned banker and can only stay at his house, he can’t travel anywhere.”

In any case, counsel for the Federal Government, Nkiru Jones-Nebo, in an oral accommodation, went against the bail application, demanding that the arraignment had not been given chance to answer in accordance with the arrangements of fair hearing revered in the constitution.

She likewise said that the arraignment had data that the respondent's refusal to submit his identification recommended his ability to sidestep and flee from his preliminary.
