Several federal airports have been renamed in honor of prominent Nigerians by President Bola Tinubu.
The Federal Ministry of Aviation issued a memo on June 1, 2023, which Mrs. Joke Olatunji for the Director of Airport Operations signed, announcing the renaming of the airports.
The President renamed the airports "as part of reforms of the Aviation sector," according to the statement.
The Maiduguri Airport was renamed after President Muhammadu Buhari, the Port Harcourt Airport was named after Obafemi Awolowo, a nationalist, and the Nasarawa Airport was named after Usman Dan Fodio, the late founder of the Sokoto Caliphate.
In addition, the Benin Airport received a new name in honor of the late Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua II; the Ebonyi Airport received a new name in honor of the late Senate President Chuba Okadigbo; and the Ibadan Airport received a new name in honor of the late Premier of the Old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola.
