At Inter Miami, legendary Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets and former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi will reunite.
Following the expiration of his contract with Barcelona, Sergio Busquets has agreed to join MLS club Inter Miami. Busquets turned down lucrative offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia.
Inter Miami posted a social media video to announce their new signing with praise for Busquets from Pep Guardiola, Xavi Hernandez, Luka Modric, and Lionel Messi.
Busquets won nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Reys, and three Champions Leagues during his 15 years at Barcelona. He also contributed to Spain's victories at the 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. He will be one of the most decorated MLS players, along with Messi.
A third former Barcelona player, left back Jordi Alba, who is also leaving the Spanish club at the end of the season, is reportedly wanted by Miami.
Messi had previously left PSG following the conclusion of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season. The 35-year-old made the decision to end his time in Europe and join Inter Miami instead of returning to Barcelona and La Liga.
The Miami Herald reports that Messi will sign a contract that lasts for two and a half years and is worth $50 million to $60 million per year, with the option to extend it until 2026.
One player will not join Inter Miami this summer, despite the ongoing negotiations for several former Messi teammates. After his contract with Juventus comes to an end at the end of June, Angel Di Maria has made the decision to return to Benfica and will sign with the Portuguese team.
According to well-known journalist Fabrizio Romano, the talks are in their final stages, and all that is needed to seal the deal are the final details. If everything goes according to plan, Di Maria will sign a contract until June 2024. He will be back at Benfica 13 years after signing his last deal, when he started a remarkable European career that saw him play for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.
