Napari Suheru, a football coach in Tamale, Ghana, has been taken into custody after he attacked a referee during a Division 1B football match on a field near the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
After the attack on Saturday, June 17, 2023, the injured Ghana Premier League referee Mohammed Sakina Nasara was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
After going into hiding since Sunday, when he was declared wanted after disturbing images and videos of the referee surfaced online, it was learned that the Tiyumba Ladies coach reported himself to the police station.
On Monday, June 19, the police issued a statement that confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect would be brought before a judge for trial.
The police statement reads: "Meanwhile, as Police investigation into the attack continues, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has engaged the Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Kurt Okraku, and the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, on the matter and urged them to notify the Police ahead of all football matches in the lower leagues in order for the Police to put in place adequate measures that will
In the meantime, the coach has been fired from her position as chair of the Sagnarigu Municipal Football Association's Women's Football Committee.
Although discharged from the Tamale Technical University hospital, the referee is still experiencing injuries from the assault.
